Austempering.In this process the part being treated is quenched at a sufficient rate to avoid transformation to ferrite and pearlite and is held at the quench temperature for a tima sufficient to give complete transformation to bainite and is then cooled to room temperature.It is claimed that the process gives greater ductility in carbon strrls which are tempered to hardnesses of about 50 Rockwell C than would be give by fully haedening and tempering to the same hardness value and that in certain steels the cewwp properties will be improved.
